In the 1950s, young composers organized concerts of contemporary music which challenged the prevailing musical conservatism. Pioneers such as Serge Garant and Maryvonne Kendergi laid the groundwork for them to create the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) in 1966.
