The 14 member Ives Ensemble was founded in 1986 by Dutch pianist John Snijders. The ensemble presents unconducted performances of 20th and 21st century chamber music, the music of Charles Ives, John Cage, Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolpe serving as its base. Composers writing especially for the Ives Ensemble include John Cage, Aldo Clementi, Walter Zimmermann, Gerald Barry, James Rolfe, Allison Cameron, Richard Ayres, Michel van der Aa and Gerhard Stäbler. The ensemble has performed at international festivals such as Gaudeamus, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Biennale Zagreb, Aterforum Festival Ferrara, Evenings of New Music (Bratislava), Klang-Aktionen ’95 (München) and HCMF (Huddersfield), in addition to presenting programmes in many European cities. Major productions include the music theatre work Cahier du Soir by Luc Ferrari (1995); two Morton Feldman retrospectives (1997 and 2007); and John Cage, Pure Coincidence: a festival in Ten Thunderclaps (2003),10 works by Cage in three days on six stages.
