Born in Abitibi, Mathieu Marcoux is a composer of electroacoustic music. He studied primarily under Yves Daoust and Serge Provost during his time at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, later attending the Musikhögskolan de Göteborg in Sweden as a student of Åke Parmerud. In 2003, he taught computer-assisted composition at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as a research assistant with the team at matralab — an inter-x arts research space at Concordia University chaired by composer Sandeep Bhagwati.
Mathieu’s approach bears the influences of musique concrète and spectral music. It also explores the realm of psychoanalysis, particularly through the use of the human voice. Placed in a position of emphasis, the voice becomes a tremendous source of sharp contrasts with both acoustic and synthetic sounds. In addition, Mathieu’s work has engaged with visual and media arts through regular collaborations with other artists.
