Performer (soprano)

Soprano Virginie Mongeau holds a Master’s degree in Classical Singing from the University of Montréal under the direction of Yolande Parent. She is a fellow of the Fonds de l’Abbé Charles-Émile-Gadbois of the University of Montréal. She participated in masterclasses led by Russell Braun, François Le Roux and Lena Hellström-Färlöf during the singing workshop at the Domaine Forget in 2015. Furthermore, she received advice from Véronique Lacroix, Ana Sokolović and Jean Lesage during her participation in the contemporary music workshop at the Orford Academy in 2016 and 2017. On the contemporary music scene Virginie is actively collaborating with contemporary composers, in fact she sings in the ensemble Les musiciens de l’Ogive, dedicated to the works of Michelle Boudreau. As she already took part in the 2015 and 2017 MNM Festival events, she will be singing as a soloist in a concert dedicated to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen and in another concert dedicated to the works of Michelle Boudreau during the 2018 edition of the festival. The soprano also appeared as a soloist with the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal during their Génération 2016 tour in Quebec in November 2016. Furthermore, she was invited to participate in the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in Brandon, Manitoba. On the Montréal and Lanaudière music scene, she can be heard regularly as a soloist during choir concerts conducted by Yvan Sabourin and Francis Guérard. Since 2013, she can also be heard in concert series, mostly self-produced, in collaboration with pianists Emanuelle Majeau-Bettez and Anna Huettel, percussionist João Catalão and guitarists Jean-François Haché and Elena Tanase. With pianist Anna Huettel she regularly organizes concerts uniting the classical repertoire and French or Québécois songs. The two artists are successful in seniors’ residences, cafes and at places with a public piano. Virginie Mongeau was a soloist at several events presented by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec as part of the Tribute Series to José Evangelista in 2017-18, especially during the reprise of the monodrama La Porte, on 20 April 2018 at the Bon Pasteur Historical Chapel, a spectacle where she played the lead role along with percussionist João Catalão. Virginie also works as a singing and choir teacher in Montréal and has been teaching introduction to opera classes at the Camp musical Père Lindsay since 2010.
