Works by Laporte.

From Dégonflement, for balloon players, to Vortex, that will send “flying cans” in motion above the hall, and by way of a new version of La Plénitude du vide (Prix Opus 2005), audiences for this concert will have multiple opportunities to immerse themselves fully in the heart of sound as Jean-François Laporte hears it.

This concert will provide a unique opportunity to hear performers who usually play conventional instruments take up balloons and cans to create music that, despite the bizarre nature of its instruments, is in now way bizarre itself. Through the unfamiliarity of its instruments, their “placement in space” in the Église Gesù, and by the nature of the music, the public that gathers for the is event will be treated to a a unique experience that is equally musical and visual.

An ensemble of varying makeup, Totem contemporain was originally founded by a young inventive composer who wanted his works to be heard, Jean-François Laporte. Since then it has evolved along with its founder. From student concerts at the Université de Montréal’s music faculty to major events on the international scene, this composer and his ensemble have gradually succeeded in overcoming the challenge of having experimental music performed in traditional environments.
