Participate in a day of study and discussion about post-exoticism in contemporary music. After more than a century of curiosities, exotica, appropriations and ethnomusicological and post-colonialist theories, this conference seeks to investigate the situation of musical aesthetics, often regarded in Montreal as hybrid or intercultural. As composers, what questions arise if we look to several musical traditions for fresh ideas? What roles are played by Native-American culture, immigrant musicians and Quebec’s cultural identity policy, in reference to the creation and reception of poly-traditionalist works? These are several of numerous questions which will be discussed on this day of dialogue.
