Niemandslandhymnen: A Treize of Terze Rime — I & II

News Item

Here, to discover every day until May 18th, the 13 poems by Sandeep Bhagwati who inspired his lastest creation Niemandslandhymnen.

I — Wind

Relentless winds sweep our earth, fan feral fires
Gusts strafe across the blazing fields
Whipping up volatile desires

Precariously safe behind our flimsy civilized shields
We wait for the lull that every storm abhors
Its vacuum, the moment when its onslaught yields

To insight, truth, reflection, metaphors.
We hope in vain.
Reason, it seems,
Is on the wane, crazy regains its force

The scorching gale around us teems
With sparks that set alight the world we knew:
Abolish boundaries, scatter souls, demolish dreams.

II — Diaspora

Abolish boundaries, scatter souls, demolish dreams!
Wir alle sind nur Inseln, treibend in der Nacht [1],
Our errance leavened solely by stray lights and beams.

Achtlos in guten Jahren haben wir selbst entfacht [2]
L’ORAGE QUI NOUS DISPERSE VERS VASTES CONTRÉES FLOUES [3]
verweht in einen Alb, aus dem man nie erwacht. [4]

ÉBRANLÉS PAR LES VENTS, ON PATAUGE DANS DES BOUES [5]
Where every route we try, ausweglos [6], will beget new quagmires
DONT LES FURIES MÉPRISENT TOUT CE QUI RESTE CHÈRE À NOUS. [7]

O let us rest awhile, watch how the world conspires
UN BREF RÉPIT [8] auf dieser Flucht [9] ere hurricanes
whip war and peace into a violent dance of gyres

  1. Soon we will all be islands, drifting in the night
  2. Careless in our good years, we ourselves have fanned
  3. The storm that scatters us to vast and blurry lands
  4. Blown inta nightmare from which we’ll never wake
  5. Shaken by winds we wade around in mud
  6. without any way out
  7. whose furies disregard all that is dear to us
  8. a short reprieve
  9. on this flight
