The Société de musique contemporaine du Québec ( SMCQ) greatly appreciates the initiative of the Festival Suoni Per Il Popolo festival in programming the performance of Ode à l’Infonie by 333 Toutartbel to be presented in Sala Rossa on Thursday, June 1st at 8 pm.

“This concert/tribute particularly touches me as the composer and co-founder of this group in 1967, with Raôul Duguay,” states Walter Boudreau, SMCQ Artistic Director. In fact, the musician/composer Boudreau and poet Duguay founded this musical group which presented performances allying music, improvisation, dance and visual art.

A genuine gathering of experimenters in multiple domains, Infonie was the most conceptual Quebec-style “happening.” Arising out of interdisciplinary exchanges stemming from Expo 67, on occasion Infonie brought together thirty artists, creators from all horizons: music, painting, welding, crafts and mime, merging itself in the work of the storyteller, the electrician or the poet.

In 1974 the group split up with the founding artists going their separate ways: Walter Boudreau towards contemporary music and Raoul Duguay towards song and writing. Recordings immortalize this lively memory of a work that is rich, complex, heterogeneous and filled with the freedom of that crazy time. After its creation in 1972 and a resurrection on CD in 2002, the expanded recording Volume 333 was reissued for a third time in December, 2016 — in vinyl and digital! — to the great pleasure of its main composer, Walter Boudreau.

On Thursday evening 333 Toutartbel, directed by Philippe Hode-Keyser, will present a colourful tribute to Infonie. The eighteen musician ensemble will attack seventeen pieces pulled from Quebec’s legendary collective repertoire, including compositions taken from “Volumes 3” and “333” plus certain pieces from soundtracks of Jean-Pierre Lefebvre’s films.
