“While I am in no way religious, the stations of the cross have personal meaning for me as the most intense performance of the drama in which a human being faces the inevitable. This great tunnel of grief channels the horrific funeral march of a man condemned to an abominable punishment — crucifixion. The sum of the music stems from a four-voice responsory by the Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), Tradiderunt Me In Manus Impiorum (“They have delivered me into the hands of the unfaithful”). Golgot(h)a is divided into two main parts, each composed of seven sections, corresponding to the fourteen stations of the cross. Each section is preceded by a fanfare, a type of refrain that acts as a transition between sections. A prelude to the first part is itself introduced by a short “pre-prelude” while an organ interlude marks the formal centrepoint of the work, and a postlude assumes the guise of a fifteenth section, representing the Resurrection.” — WB

Golgot(h)a received the Grand Prix Paul Gilson from the Community of French Language Radios in Paris in March 1991. This work was commissioned by the Société Radio-Canada.
