The composition of this four-movement work began in Yogyakarta (Java), in May of 1986. My work area afforded me a view of the imposing Merapi volcano (literally meaning “mountain of fire”), and yet, since it was often hidden by fog and clouds, I was rarely able to see it in its entirety. In the same way, the melodic line which constitutes the skeletal framework of this piece is constantly veiled by ornamentation and changes in instrumentation and register, appearing now tangibly explicit, now virtually immaterial. Merapi is dedicated to the memory of Serge Garant.
