ondes Martenot, piano and percussion

Composed in a musical language that bears little resemblance to his mature style, Prolifération dates from Vivier’s conservatory days and is a reflection of its time. It stood out from the moment it was premiered by the SMCQ in 1970—a performance led by Serge Garant, who held Vivier in high regard throughout his career. The critic Laurentin Lévesque considered this work, “as weird as comic strips and life can also be!” This comparison seems justified by the work’s episodic structure, in which agitated periods that are worked out in the extreme low and high registers of the piano and the Ondes Martenot alternate with ethereal melodic moments, dialogues between instruments, and most important, peaceful moments of silence.
