Toshtuk, Giant of the Steppes, is also husband to Kenjeke. His child will be born only when he returns from the ends of the earth where he has journeyed to retrieve his stolen soul. His trusty steed Tchal-Kouyrouk carries him at great speed across Shanghai, between skyscrapers. He does not stop at the People’s Park, despite its beauty. But the Giant’s gaze penetrates all—nothing is able to resist. In this way, it absorbs the fifteen constitutive elements, in a whirl of frenetic euphoria.

From the mouth of Er-Toshtuk, Giant of the Steppes, the truth about the birth and importance of Shanghai and other Wonder-Cities will out.

This work was commissioned by the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal for Duo Kovalis, and made possible by a grand from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
