Aubes (Dawn or daybreak) is the third in a series of works inspired by the Spiritual Canticles of Saint John of the Cross. It is written for the unusual combination of bass flute, double bass, and percussion. The composition requires the use of several extended performance techniques. Aubes moves from the radiance and efflorescence of daybreak to a quiet meditation on Saint John’s “… the silent concert, the sonorous solitude…” which Tremblay sees not as an end to, but rather as a pursuit of music.
