trumpet and processing

Premiere: March 2, 2015, Montréal / Nouvelles Musiques 2015: Multi trompettes et folie, Hexagram Black Box — Édifice EV — Université Concordia, Montréal (Québec)

This project grew out of my desire to work with Frédéric Demers. To create this piece, I folded, cut and pasted together a trumpeter, his repertoire and his day-to-day life, and a psychologist with his discourse on psychosis. The instrumental component of L’audition is based upon a combination of excerpts of Handel, Mussorsky/Ravel and Stravinsky that trumpeters auditioning for an orchestra are often required to play.

I would like to thank Frédéric’s family for having agreed to allow the presence of a microphone in their home for an entire day. I am also grateful to Alexandre L’Archevêque, the psychologist, for having lent his voice and time to producing the interview that made L’audition possible.
