The Ensemble de la SMCQ (known as Groupe instrumental de Montréal from 1966 to March 1971) is renowned for its exceptional level of cohesion, precision, and expressive means. The Ensemble — a group of excellent musicians that can vary from 5 to 45 indivi- duals—is at the core of its concert activity, and is often joined by prestigious visiting ensembles or guest soloist, like Yvonne Loriod, Robert Dick, Louise Pellerin or Claude Helffer, or prestigious international ensembles such as the Ensemble InterContemporain, the Arditti Quartet or Steve Reich and musicians. The Ensemble de la SMCQ has had three artistic directors since its founding: Serge Garant (1966-86), Gilles Tremblay (1986-88) and Walter Boudreau (1988-2022). Artistic director since 2022, Ana Sokolović, is assisted by Cristian Gort as principal conductor and musical advisor.
