Born in Tokyo in 1969, Misato Mochizuki studied at Tokyo University of the Arts where, in 1992, she earned a Master’s Degree in composition. She then continued her composition training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, her current city of residence. In 1995, she received her first prize for composition and began advanced courses with Paul Mefano and Emmanuel Nunes. In 1996-1997, she studied the composition and computer-music curriculum at IRCAM, where she worked, in particular, with Tristan Murail. She has won numrous prizes and her works have been played at international festivals (Donaueschingen, MANCA) by some of the most active ensembles, like the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, SFB-Radio’s Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Ensemble intercontemporain, the Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Ictus, the Nieuw Ensemble, 2e2m and Court-Circuit. Her first monographic disc, released in 2003, with Klangforum Wien (produced by KAIROS), received critical acclaim.
A unique combination of western and Asian traditions, Misato Mochizuki’s compositions feature seductive rhythms and rich tones. Her work is marked by great freedom of form and style and the interplay of subtle colours. She is influenced as much by eastern modes as by her prodigious knowledge of a wide range of current trends. Her discography, produced by Brietkopf & Härtel, currently includes over 40 compositions, including seven symphonic works and ten ensemble pieces.
