Lloyd Carr-Harris String Quartet and Schulich String Quartet perform works by Bartók, Rihm and Webern.
Winner of a number of prizes, the Lloyd Carr-Harris String Quartet has quickly established itself as one of Canada’s major string quartets. Founded in 2002 by Professor André Roy, its members are all recipients of Lloyd Carr-Harris scholarships awarded by McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. Together with the Schulich String Quartet, also founded by André Roy in 2005, they will perform works by Bartok, Webern, and Rihm.
Faithful to the master of musical miniature, Webern’s Six Bagatelles communicate a complex musical idea in the space of a few minutes. This is a world a way from Bartok’s Third String Quartet, the movements of which flow seamlessly together for a work that lasts about four times longer — the Hungarian composer’s shortest work! Rihm’s music is much more recent, but is deeply anchored in the formal tradition of the string quartet: his six movements betray the influence of Beethoven, Mahler, and Janacek.
