On February 20th and 21st, works by Walter Boudreau will be played at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, during a concert entitled Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Following the performance of a short masterpiece by Ravel, the CNA Orchestra will welcome Alain Lefèvre on stage to perform Walter Boudreau’s Concerto de l’asile, a work which attained an immense success at its 2013 premiere by the OSM.

The Concerto is inspired by a short waltz (Valse de l’asile) as part of theatrical music which the composer wrote for Claude Gauvreau’s work L’asile de la pureté, presented by the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM) in 2004. At Lefèvre’s request. Boudreau later composed a piano version of the waltz.

Boudreau and Lefèvre became friends and later Lefèvre convinced Boudreau to compose a piece based on the original waltz: le Concerto de l’asile. The work depicts the tension between Gauvreau’s visionary poetic universe (the piano) and the obscurantist society of the time, embodied by the orchestra.
