It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of composer José Evangelista on January 9, 2023. Ana Sokolović, Walter Boudreau and the entire SMCQ team wish to express their sincere condolences to his family and to the entire musical community.

Born in Valencia, Spain, this talented and prolific composer spent most of his career in Montréal, where he wrote more than 80 works with an approach which fully explored melody. His music, coloured by his Spanish origins and his many travels, notably to Bali, was celebrated during our 2017-18 Homage Series. We invite you to rediscover his life through the comic book dedicated to him by the SMCQ, or through the four videos that allow you to discover him.

José Evangelista was also professor emeritus in the Faculty of Music of l’Université de Montréal where he taught composition to Ana Sokolović, Samy Moussa and many others.

His widow Matilde Asencio sent us the following message: “In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations to the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) for its Youth Sector, whose objective is to awaken the musical ear and imagination of young people.”
