Integral/parent work: Impasto

Commission: Codes d’accès, with support from the CALQ

Premiere: April 29, 2006, Les machines à communiquer: III: Concert de musique électroacoustique, La Chapelle — scènes contemporaines, Montréal (Québec)

Sound recordings of the outside; abandoned sounds from old pieces; sounds downloaded from the “One-Minute Vacations” section of the Quiet American website (Thanks!). Studio sound recordings of all sorts of voices and objects; oscillator combats; extreme automation of volume; continuous pan and controller; synthesizers: Evolver, Creamware, Reaktor and PlasticZ; sampler: K.; treatments: none.

Liberally inspired by Pollock’s, Riopelle’s, Shiraga’s and Tobey’s abstract expressionism. From these artists: recreate the pictorial frenzy, the jubilant colours or the sense of being overly full that calms in the end, create brief gestures that penetrate the ear to its most silent depths, build up an instrumentarium for spontaneity of composition and rapidity of performance.

The premiere of this commission for Codes d’Accès was made possible thanks to a grant from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
