piano, clarinet, bassoon and trumpet

Axiom owes its title in part to the fact that the work was premiered by the pianist Emanuel Ax. This quartet for piano and wind instruments is part of a six- or seven-piece cycle devoted to the piano. The project was influenced by William Faulkner’s novel The Sound and the Fury, in which the story is told by several different narrators and is accordingly written in a very different style from one chapter to the next. The piano part in this cycle remains more or less unchanged. The first piece is for solo piano; in the subsequent pieces, this constant part is confronted with three wind instruments, a symphonic orchestra, a string orchestra, electronics, a string quartet, etc. From one piece to the next, we always find the same piano part, but it undergoes a metamorphosis each time according to the specific instrumental context in which it is set.
