About Greeting music, Claude Vivier wrote in the programme notes of the premiere given by the group Days Months and Years to come: “Greeting music is in fact a very sad piece. All five musicians should perform with no facial expressions whatsoever and limit their body movements to those strictly needed to perform the piece: they should somewhat behave like zombies. This piece is the expression of a hopeless world where nothing is to be done, or felt.” Greeting music was first performed in Vancouver on February 25, 1979, Patrick Wedd conducting.
