flute (alto flute), clarinet (bass clarinet), alto saxophone (baritone saxophone), synthetizer, 2 percussions, viola and fixed medium
Straight on Till Morning was commissioned by the composer Alcides Lanza for McGill’s Group of the Electronic Music Studio (GEMS), which gave the first performance in 1985. The work is scored for flute (and alto flute), clarinet (and bass clarinet), alto saxophone (and baritone saxophone), synthesizer, two percussion, viola and tape. The recorded sounds were generated on the Synclavier II in the McGill Electronic Music Studio.
The composer has supplied the following notes on his work: “The fusion of acoustic and electronic sounds takes the form of a metaphysical journey through space and time. The succession of loosely defined sections form a single continuum, which carries the listener through regions of cosmic interest.”
