“When every gesture of love is finished”: a verse from the Novissimum Testamentum by Edoardo Sanguineti, is a poignant confrontation of love at his death. The same poetry inspired the title of a violin concerto Every gesture of love a slow descent woven through the chromatic scale that ends in a final glimmer of light. Sanguineti died suddenly of an aneurysm on May 18, 2010 a few days after the premiere of the piece, leaving an unbridgeable void in the devastated Italian cultural landscape. After futile attempts to re-imagine Ogni gesto d’amore, I decided to follow the same path, building the shape and the melodies on the descending chromatic scale, up to the crossroads near which I had lingered the first time. Then, I followed the other direction.
