This composition is a piece from a larger cycle of works, all part of a media opera called Dreamlives of Debris, using texts by the American writer Lance Olsen. The main musical idea of these works explores models I have developed based on The Auditory Pathway of the Brain. “Thrinos” is a Greek word for Lament and in this work the source codes comes from Monteverdi and Bunraku (Japanese Puppet Theater). My approach to both electronic sound and video places me in the position of director — I generate a score with my ideas, which is then brought to life in close collaboration with others who have the proper technical and artistic capabilities. In this case, the work uses fixed media sound and video, realized by Adam Vidiksis (sound), Nick Lerman (video editing and animation) and Ryutaro Hakamata (cinematography). The vocal part focuses on split tone and multiphonic sounds, which the singer Nicholas Isherwood has studied and developed with great seriousness and dedication.
